Just like that, the Blue Jays won another series.
On Sunday afternoon, the Blue Jays played the rubber match against the Pittsburgh Pirates, defeating them 5-4 to bring their season record to 28-30.
For the 24th consecutive game, the Blue Jays failed to score in the first inning, increasing their franchise record. It was in fact, Rowdy Tellez who opened the scoring as he had an RBI single in the top of the third. After the Jays scored on a wild pitch, Tellez hit a double in the top of the fifth to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
Just like the first time the Pirates scored, the Blue Jays immediately answered in the bottom half of their inning, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a single for a run, before Daniel Vogelbach hit his fifth double of the season giving the Jays a 4-3 lead.

The Blue Jays added a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Davis Schneider hit his 14th double of the season to give Toronto a 5-3 lead. That was the game-winning run, as Tellez drove in another run in the top of the ninth with a single.
Things worth mentioning…
Chris Bassitt made the start for the Blue Jays and picked up the win, as he finished with a line of 5 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Not the prettiest game of his career, but his season ERA is down to 4.13.
Chris Bassitt's 3Ks in the 1st.
Chad Green pitched in the sixth inning, striking out and walking two in his inning of work. His season ERA is now down to 1.69 and he’s been a big help to the bullpen. Trevor Richards pitched a clean inning, while Nate Pearson struck out a batter and allowed a hit in his inning of work.
Yimi García gave up an earned run in his inning of work, but managed to strike out three. Although he doesn’t have a sub 3 earned run average anymore, it’s still at a fantastic 1.57.
Several players had multi-hit days. Daulton Varsho hit his 10th double of the season with a single, Davis Schneider hit his 14th double and had a single. Guess what, Daniel Vogelbach hit a double and a single, while Danny Jansen had two singles. Other players with a hit were Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made his first start at third base since 2019, playing just four innings at the position the past four seasons. He only played his rookie season there, where he had -20 Outs Above Average and -15 Defensive Runs Saved. It’s interesting he started at third on Sunday.
Up next: The Blue Jays return to action on Monday at 7:07, as they’ll host the Baltimore Orioles for a four-game series. Kevin Gausman will get the start against the team that drafted him. Over their last four series, the Blue Jays have won three of them, so hopefully they can keep the momentum rolling.
