The 2026 season is an important campaign for both the Toronto Blue Jays and their star first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
He is coming off a great performance with the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic and one of the greatest postseason runs by a player with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025. However, he came up short on both occasions, with the Dominican Republic falling to the United States in the semifinals and the Blue Jays losing in Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With the Blue Jays’ success in 2025, Guerrero put forward a solid year, although it was down from his 2024 numbers in comparison. His slash line of .292/.381/.467 from last season was not as potent as his .323/.396/.544 line two years ago. He still played well enough to make his fifth consecutive All-Star appearance and finished 13th in MVP voting. However, he faced his fair share of slumps, particularly in September when he batted .203 during the final 18 games of the regular season. Guerrero was battling some notable ailments last season, so there is a strong chance that they played a part, but he was almost 1.4 bWAR below his 2024 numbers compared to the year before.
The Blue Jays winning the AL East gave them a week of rest before the start of the ALDS. During that week off, Guerrero seemed to figure out what wasn’t working, because once the postseason started, there was no way to stop him. He slashed .397/.494/.795 during the playoffs. His eight home runs set a franchise record and outnumbered his strikeouts (7). Guerrero cemented himself as the face of the Blue Jays. That had already been decided in April when he signed a franchise-record 14-year, $500 million contract extension, but the playoffs removed any doubt that he was the right choice to lead the Blue Jays.
With Guerrero entering the first year of his new contract, he can start the season with job security that he hasn’t had in the last two seasons. The contract negotiations seemed to weigh on both Guerrero and the team at the start of last year. The signing of the contract seemed to take a weight off his shoulders and acted as a turning point for the team to become contenders in a stacked AL East. Perhaps without the stress of contract negotiations, Guerrero will get off to a stronger start to 2026.
He certainly seemed to have maintained his strong form during the offseason. In the WBC, he slashed .444/.476/.944 with eight hits and as many RBIs. He also made it through the tournament without striking out. On a stacked Dominican Republic team, Guerrero stuck out, posting the highest OPS amongst Dominican players with at least 10 at-bats (1.420). Guerrero seemed to pick up right where he left off during the World Series. But despite his incredible form in the playoffs and the WBC, Guerrero is still looking for his first championship.
With the Blue Jays embarking on their revenge tour, Guerrero is primed for a big 2026. The playoffs and the WBC showed that Guerrero is at his best when he’s a man on a mission. This season, the Blue Jays have quite the mission ahead of them: get back to the World Series and, this time, take home the trophy.
While Guerrero’s form is promising heading into the season, he’ll have to adapt to a different level of intensity. He’s played some of the most pressure-filled baseball of his life recently. Now he has to maintain his strong form while playing games at a much lower level of intensity. However, he’ll probably find plenty of motivation in trying to get the Blue Jays back into the fall classic.
The Blue Jays’ success in 2026 will depend heavily on how Guerrero performs. The team’s worst slumps in 2025 came when Guerrero struggled most.
In April, the Blue Jays lost five of six to the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. Guerrero recorded only three hits during that span. During his September slump, the Blue Jays lost six of seven against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Kansas City Royals, and the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees caught up to the Blue Jays in the division standings, causing the AL East to come down to the final day of the regular season with the Blue Jays winning on a tiebreaker.
There will also be extra pressure on him to come through offensively this year as the Blue Jays adapt to not having Bo Bichette in the lineup. How big a hole that loss leaves in the Blue Jays’ lineup will depend on how Kazuma Okamoto adapts to MLB pitching. Still, the pressure will be on Guerrero to make up for the loss of one of MLB’s best contact hitters.
The Blue Jays are a well-rounded enough team not to rely solely on any one player, but it’s no secret that when Guerrero is playing well, it impacts the full squad. Their success in 2025 was based on contributions from every member of the team. That being said, Guerrero is the face of the franchise and a leader amongst the players. When he’s at his best, so is everyone else.
Guerrero’s swing and confidence look better than ever to start the 2026 season. Last season saw him truly step up as the leader of the Blue Jays. He enters this season with the experience of competing in a World Series. He knows what needs to be done to reach the pinnacle of the sport. With that experience and the motivation to finish what the Blue Jays started last year, Guerrero is set up to have one of the biggest seasons of his career.
