Brett Bateman has provided a spark for the Toronto Blue Jays since joining the team.

Bateman was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for fan-favourite pitcher Kevin Gausman at the trade deadline. Few players have meant as much to the Blue Jays as Gausman, but Bateman has made the sting of losing him hurt a little bit less.

He joined the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons following the trade but only played two games with the team before he was called up to the Blue Jays.

Bateman made his MLB debut on August 7 against the Philadelphia Phillies. He made an immediate impression, hitting a double off Zack Wheeler on the first pitch he saw.

At the time Bateman made his debut, the Blue Jays were 3.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot with a 54-62 record. Since then, the Blue Jays have gone 16-9 and sit half a game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild card berth. Bateman has played an important role in the Blue Jays’ surge.

In his first month in MLB, Bateman has slashed .330/.380/.396 with 30 hits and 7 RBI. The Blue Jays have already put a lot of trust in Bateman, making him their everyday leadoff hitter.

Bateman was drafted by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 2023 draft. He was ranked 21st in the Cubs’ organization when he was traded to the Blue Jays. After the deadline, Bateman was the 16th-ranked prospect in the Blue Jays system.

His biggest strength is his speed, which he grades out at 70. He has showcased that speed with the Blue Jays, with three stolen bases and smart base running.

Bateman’s fielding grades out at 65. He’s already racked up three Outs Above Average (OAA) and three Fielding Run Value (FRV) with the Blue Jays.

He also has a very strong arm, which grades out at 55 and is ranked in the 91st percentile in MLB. The combination of speed and arm strength has made Bateman a very effective centre fielder for the Blue Jays so far.

Bateman’s hitting grades out at 50; however, his power only grades out at 30. His lack of power is definitely the biggest weakness in his game. He only hit six home runs during his time in the minors, though three of them were in 2026 with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He has yet to hit his first home run in MLB. This could be a problem for the Blue Jays, who have struggled with power in 2026.

He has made up for his lack of power by showing off his high contact ability. Since being called up to the Blue Jays, he’s led the team in hits. Bateman has also shown a lot of patience in his at-bats so far. He has a 7.8 per cent walk rate and a 21.6 per cent strikeout rate.

Bateman has shown a lot of promise to start his MLB career. When he was traded to the organization, the thought of the Blue Jays making the playoffs seemed unlikely. The team has looked a lot stronger since the deadline, and Bateman has been a big contributor to their resurgence.

The trade to the Blue Jays also worked out for Bateman because he likely would have struggled to break through in the Cubs organization. The Cubs have the best centre fielder in MLB, Pete Crow-Armstrong, who is currently the odds-on favourite to win the NL MVP award. The presence of Crow-Armstrong would have made it tough for Bateman to reach the MLB level with the Cubs, let alone to stay there.

Bateman has handled the pressure of joining a team in a playoff race well. On top of that, he’s also had the pressure of being the return for a fan favourite in Gausman and replacing Daulton Varsho in centre field, who was a big part of the Blue Jays’ success in 2025. From watching Bateman so far, it would be hard to tell that he’s only played one month in MLB.

Despite his lack of experience, Bateman has already made an impact on the Blue Jays. He’s played an important role in their climb back into the playoff picture. The Blue Jays have already shown their trust in him by making him their regular leadoff hitter and giving him plenty of reps in centre field. So far, Bateman has been up for the challenge and exceeded expectations to start his tenure with the Blue Jays.

So far, Bateman’s profile has been proven accurate. He’s a plus defender with great contact skills and elite speed. So far, that has been exactly what the Blue Jays have needed. The only thing lacking from his game is power, but he’s made up for it by being strong in every other area of the game.
