With Kendrys Morales on the 10-day disabled list and Randal Grichuk looking completely lost at the plate, Blue Jays fans have been asking about the whereabouts of Teoscar Hernandez. Well, John Gibbons gave us some news on that whole situation when he appeared on MLB Network Radio Friday morning.
It was a very Gibby answer, but he said that we should expect to see Hernandez soon. Like, tomorrow soon? Maybe. Maybe not! Gibby being extremely Gibby on brand here, we get a bit of a hint, but, ultimately the message is quite vague.
In yesterday’s Bisons game, Ian Parmley pinch hit for Hernandez in the eighth inning. That’s obviously a little curious considering Hernandez had clubber a homer in an earlier at bat and Parmley, uh, isn’t a better player, to put it lightly.
The Bisons have only played four games due to weather issues this season, but Hernandez has been solid at the plate in his opportunities. He has five hits in 18 plate appearances and two homers. A little more problematic, though, is that he hasn’t walked and he’s struck out seven times.
Can’t be much worse than Grichuk, though! Obviously the Jays aren’t going to give up on Grichuk after two weeks, but I also don’t expect them to continue rolling with an eight-man ‘pen until Morales is ready to return to the lineup. All signs seem to point at Hernandez joining the team sooner rather than later.
AAAAAAAND THERE IT IS.
Just as I hit publish, Ben Nicholson-Smith reported that Hernandez was with the Jays taking batting practice in Cleveland. I imagine we’ll see Tim Mayza sent back to Triple-A in the next few minutes.
