More Large Adult Sons! The Blue Jays announced today that righty Justin Shafer and catcher Reese McGuire will be added to the team’s active roster.
Shafer was with the team earlier but wasn’t immediately added to the expanded roster because players have to spend 10 days down after being optioned. Shafer, an eight-round pick of the Jays in 2014, has had a fantastic season, posting a 1.13 ERA between Double- and Triple-A. He’s also tossed five clean innings for the Blue Jays thus far.
Reese McGuire is an interesting add given the fact the Jays already have Danny Jansen, Luke Maile, and Russell Martin on the team. McGuire was one of the two prospects (Harold Ramirez being the other) acquired back in 2016 when the Jays sent Drew Hutchison to the Pirates for Francisco Liriano. That deal is still hilariously puzzling as Toronto got a great 2016 run out of Liriano and two prospects for taking on his salary all in return for a guy who never did anything with the Pirates organization.
Anyways, McGuire is known as a glove-first catching prospect. He slashed a .233/.312/.339 line with the Bisons this year splitting time with Jansen. It’s hard to say how much time he’ll get, but I always think it’s worthwhile to get these prospects up for a cup of coffee at the big league level.
Also, in case you missed it (I did), David Paulino, one of the pitchers acquired in the Roberto Osuna deal, was activated from the disabled list and is available in Toronto’s bullpen.
