He’s alive! Blue Jays third-round pick Adam Kloffenstein finally made his professional debut Monday for the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays.
There wasn’t anything major holding him back from his debut, or anything, the Jays just held him back because he was drafted coming off of a busy season in high school. Anyways, the young righty tossed one scoreless inning against the Phillies, striking out two and allowing one walk. There isn’t much time left, but I suspect we’ll see Kloffenstein get a few more reps before the end of short season.
His teammate from Magnolia High School, Toronto’s first-round pick Jordan Groshans, got the call up to the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Appalachian League last week. Groshans has had a slow start at the level, going 1-for-12, though he’s only struck out once. For the season, he has an .845 OPS between two levels.
It looks like Nate Pearson might be able to squeeze in some work this season after all. Pearson, Toronto’s top pitching prospect, has had his entire 2018 season derailed due to injury. He started the year late and didn’t make his debut with the Dunedin Jays until May. Then, in his first start, he took a line drive off his arm and has been sidelined since. Pearson will throw a bullpen session on Monday meaning there’s a slight chance he could get into a game before the end of the season. There isn’t much time, though, as Dunedin’s season only goes until Sept. 2. I’m guessing that even if Pearson doesn’t make it into a game with Dunedin, he’ll be added to an Arizona Fall League team to make up for the time that he missed.
Sticking with pitchers, Sean Reid-Foley has been sent back to Triple-A for seasoning. His first start against Kansas City was solid but he had a rough time against the Yankees’ powerful lineup. That said, I imagine we’ll see him back up come September.
Another guy we could see in September is Rowdy Tellez. He’s on the 40-man roster and he’s done a lot in the past month to regain prospect status within the organization. He had three multi-hit games last week including a showing with two homers and three RBIs. For the season, he’s worked himself up to a .785 OPS, which is impressive given the fact he was sitting in the .600s just a couple months ago.
