Lourdes Gurriel’s season is over, Bo Bichette’s might (should) be as well

4 years agoBack on Thursday, Bo Bichette got hit in the head by a 93-mile-per-hour pitch from Tampa Bay Rays starter Gabriel Ynoa. He would stay in the game for another inning, playing defensively in the field and taking an at-bat, before getting taken out in favour of Richard Urena.
He hasn’t played since then and there’s a good chance that it’ll end up being his final game of the season.
As Scott Mitchell reports, Bichette is currently going through concussion protocol in order to make it back onto the field before the end of the season on Sunday. Given the fact the season is over, there’s really no sense in bringing Bichette back. This is the first time he’s dealt with a concussion and there’s no need to take any kind of risk when it comes to head injuries.
Arden Zwelling wrote in a post for Sportsnet a few days ago that Justin Smoak guided the young Bichette through the process of navigating his first-ever concussion.
Huffman noticed that as he stood in the on-deck circle, Bichette didn’t take a single warm-up swing. She thought that was pretty unusual. Then, after he struck out on four pitches, missing a couple of them badly, Bichette walked slowly back to the dugout where Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak asked him if everything was OK.“I was like, ‘I don’t know, man — I feel weird.’ And he told me, ‘Hey, this is nothing to play around with,’” Bichette said. “So, that’s when I decided I probably should let somebody know I felt different.”
I’m not going to pretend to be an expert when it comes to head injuries by any stretch, but more and more we’ve been starting to see the long-term ramifications of these injuries all throughout sports. If there’s any type of injury to err on the side of caution, it would be this.
In other injury news, Lourdes Gurriel was pulled from yesterday’s lineup due to an illness. It turns out that Gurriel was suffering from appendicitis and he’ll be out for the season after undergoing a standard surgery.
