Marcus Stroman is the newest addition to the disabled list

The injuries just keep piling up. The Jays, already with Randal Grichuk, Steve Pearce, Aledmys Diaz, and Troy Tulowitzki on the shelf, announced today that Marcus Stroman would be placed on the 10-day disabled list with “shoulder fatigue.”

The Jays also sent Tim Mayza back to Triple-A, giving them room to add two more pitchers to the active roster. Joe Biagini, the team’s sixth starter between Toronto and Buffalo, predictably has been recalled, along with Sam Gaviglio. One of Biagini or Gaviglio will slide into Stroman’s spot in the rotation on Sunday while the other will give the ‘pen a badly-needed long man who can eat some innings if things go sideways.

I don’t have to go into detail about Biagini because we all know who he is, but Gaviglio is a little more of a mystery. Gaviglio was acquired back in March from the Royals for cash. He’s been excellent thus far with Triple-A Buffalo, posting a 1.86 ERA through five starts. In his big league career between Seattle and Kansas City, he owns a 4.36 ERA over 13 starts and three relief appearances. Depth depth depth!

Anyways, yeah, this Stroman news is a little out of the blue, but it isn’t all that shocking. We don’t know yet how long Stroman will be out, but given the way he’s pitched thus far — a 7.71 ERA with 7.7 K/9, 4.3 BB/9 and 1.21 HR/9 in 37 1/3 innings over seven starts — taking some time away to rest up can’t be a bad thing.

Stroman had a delayed start to spring training due to a shoulder injury. He didn’t make his first spring start until the Jays played Canada’s Junior National Team in the middle of March and he was ultimately pushed back from making the team’s Opening Day start against the New York Yankees. Putting everything together, the injury in spring and the terrible results this season, it’s pretty clear Stroman wasn’t ready to go coming into the season. Hopefully this rest is what he needs to regain form because the Jays need the good Stroman that we know and love in order to be successful this season.
