The Blue Jays came into this afternoon’s game at risk of getting swept by the fucking Orioles, which would have really dampened the mood of this young season. Fortunately, Matt Shoemaker came to play.

Things worth mentioning…

  • Matt Shoemaker! Fuck yeah! Shoemaker, who was kind of a wild card off-season addition nobody really talked all that much about, had his second-consecutive brilliant start to begin his Blue Jays career. Shoemaker went seven shutout innings, scattering just two hits and one walk while striking out eight. He’s now gone 14 innings over two starts without allowing a run.
  • The Jays finally managed to score a run their first time through the order. Randal Grichuk hit a double and Teoscar Hernandez drove him in with a little assistance from Baltimore’s third baseman. Hernandez grounded one to third but this Rio Ruiz guy airmailed the throw, allowing Grichuk to score.
  • Grichuk was the star of the day offensively. After that double, he hit two solo bombs, helping to shoe everyone why the front office was so giddy to get him signed to a five-year extension. It’s a home run league these days, and let me tell you, Randal knows how to hit home runs.
  • Daniel Hudson was brought in to mop up the ninth inning with a 5-0 lead. He got spanked around, allowing a three-run homer. Maybe he just wanted to give Ken Giles an opportunity to earn a save? Who knows!
