This team looked toast on Sunday. It’s amazing how quickly things can change.
After pulling off a sweep of the Phillies on Thursday’s doubleheader, the Blue Jays suddenly boast a 12-11 record and are sitting in a playoff spot.

Things worth mentioning…

  • In Game 1, Chase Anderson got the ball and grinded his way through three-and-two-thirds of work, scattering a couple of runs on four hits and a walk. It was nothing spectacular, but Anderson allowed the Jays a chance to win the game, which is all you can ask for from your fifth starter. After him, the bullpen was fantastic.
  • Julian Merryweather, the infamous PTBNL from the Josh Donaldson trade finally made his debut for the team, which was a cool sight given the fact many fans were skeptical that he was even real. It took him a long time to get here, but Merryweather made it memorable by picking up four outs, three of which came via the strikeout.
  • After Merryweather, Wilmer Font tossed a scoreless frame and Jordan Romano struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning, giving the offence a chance to walk things off. And that’s exactly what happened, as Teoscar Hernandez and Vladimir Guererro smacked back-to-back singled before Gurriel won the game on a single of his own.
  • In Game 2, Trent Thornton made his return from the Injured List and, uh, it did not go well. Andrew McCutchen and Rhys Hoskins hit soft singles to kick things off, then Bryce Harper took a walk, and Didi Gregorious smacked another soft single. Eventually, Thornton looked like he just ran out of gas the Phillies started to tee off on him. All told, Thornton allowed six earned runs on five hits and a walk while recording just two outs.

  • After that disastrous first inning in which the Jays went down 7-0, the bullpen did an amazing mop-up job. Jacob Waguespack allowed some of Thornton’s runners to score, but he then tossed two scoreless frames after that. Shun Yamaguchi came in next and worked two-and-two-thirds innings before handing the ball off to Anthony Kay.
  • Thanks to that effort from the ‘pen, the Blue Jays were able to execute one of the most shocking comebacks we’ve seen. Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run dinger in the bottom of the first to make it 7-2, but the offence didn’t do anything else until the sixth inning. Rowdy Tellez led off with a massive solo homer, then Lourdes Gurriel hit a three-run bomb (driving in Vlad and Teoscar) to make it 7-6. Finally, the Phillies did their best 2015 Texas Rangers Game 5 Inning 7 imitation, booting the ball all around the infield, giving the Jays waaaay too many extra outs. Danny Jansen would tie the game on a wild pitch and then Tellez, who got it all started off, gave the Jays the lead with a single.
  • There was obviously a lot to like on Thursday, but the star of the day was Lourdes Gurriel, who seems to be getting himself into a groove at the plate. Gurriel went 3-for-7 with four runs driven in during the doubleheader. He’s 6-for-16 in his last five games now, which is a great sign given how hard he was struggling a week ago. Gurriel has been an incredibly streaky hitter throughout his career, but getting him hot would be huge for the Jays’ lineup.
