Patrick Murphy is back, Carl Edwards Jr. to the Injured List, and T.J. Zeuch is starting on Thursday

There’s a whole bunch of deck chair shuffling going on with the Blue Jays pitching staff right now.

The team has activated Patrick Murphy from the 60-day Injured List and he’ll be active for tonight’s game against the Yankees. Murphy has been sidelined all season due to an AC joint injury but pitched very well in Triple-A during his rehab stint. Murphy tossed nine-and-two-thirds innings over seven outings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out 13.

The hope, of course, is that Murphy can be a solution to the team’s bullpen woes. Last season, he made four appearances, tossing six innings while allowing just one earned run. It certainly isn’t much of a sample size of success, but it’s something different from the disaster the team has been trotting out each night lately.

Murphy’s spot on the 40-man roster comes from Steven Matz, who is currently off the roster due to being placed on the COVID Injured List. That means the Blue Jays will have to DFA somebody when Matz is back, or somebody else will need to be moved to the 60-day IL.

Speaking of Matz, he was scheduled to start on Thursday, but obviously won’t due to quarantine, and T.J. Zeuch will be called up in his place. We all know what the expect from Zeuch at this point so there isn’t much need to go into detail. Somebody else will have to go down in place of Zeuch before he’s activated tomorrow.

Finally, Carl Edwards Jr. has been placed on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain suffered in his outing on Tuesday against the Yankees. Travis Bergen, who had been on the IL with a shoulder issue, has been activated and sent to Triple-A.
