The Blue Jays recalled Eric Sogard in place of the struggling Lourdes Gurriel yesterday. As a result, they had to make a corresponding roster move in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Sogard.
The team announced today that they have moved Ryan Borucki from the 10-day Injured List to the 60-day Injured List, indicating that his elbow issues are more serious that originally anticipated.
Borucki, of course, was originally slated to be on of Toronto’s five starting pitchers out of the gate this season, but elbow soreness resulted in him starting the season on the Injured List. It was originally expected that he would only be out for a few weeks and that he would be back with the club in mid-to-late April, but Borucki experienced soreness in his elbow in a minor league game last week.
This is obviously disappointing news as the young starter had an excellent start to his Major League career last season. That said, given the fact he’s already had Tommy John surgery once in his career, the Jays really don’t need to rush Borucki back and potentially risk a serious injury, especially in what’s basically a nothing season.
Borucki will be eligible to be activated from the 60-day Injured List on May 27th.
