The Blue Jays will be in New York for a quick two-game series with the Mets, who are in a completely Mets-esque tailspin, today and tomorrow.

We haven’t seen our former Large Adult Son, the one controversially dealt to New York back prior to the 2013 disaster season in a deal for reigning Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey, since 2015. That was during Noah Syndergaard’s breakout rookie campaign. He shut the Jays down for one run on two hits over six innings while fanning 11 batters. That game was frustrating because Jose Bautista smacked a game-tying homer in the ninth inning, then they pulled ahead in the top of the 11th before allowing the Mets to walk it off with a Lucas Dude bloop single. I remember it vividly because Danny Valencia was playing second base for some reason and he fucked up a possible double play ball. Anyways, Syndergaard, after missing most of 2017 due to injury, has been excellent this year. He’s made eight starts, owns a 3.09 ERA, and is striking out 10.4 batters per nine. Jaime Garcia will go for the Jays. He had a stretch of terrible games going for about a month but his last outing against Seattle in which he allowed one run over five innings was an improvement.

Zack Wheeler was the guy the Mets got in return from San Fransisco in the Carlos Beltran trade like a million years ago. I remember when it was going to be Wheeler and Matt Harvey manning the top of New York’s rotation for a decade, but everything went to hell. Wheeler has had a difficult time staying healthy. He missed all of 2015 and 2016 and only pitched 86 1/3 innings in 2017. In 2018 so far, Wheeler has a 5.03 ERA through six starts and has struggled with command. He’ll go against J.A. Happ who’s coming off his worst start of the season. Happ got tagged by the Mariners for seven runs over just three-and-a-third innings. It was just the second time all year Happ wasn’t able to clear five innings.

After starting the season 11-1, the Mets have started to look like the Mets. Since the beginning of May, the Mets have dropped nine of 11 games, sliding them all the way down to 19-18 for the season. Over that span of poor play, the Mets have scored more than three runs in a game just twice. Their lineup, the one featuring the rotting husks of Jay Bruce and Adrian Gonzalez smack in the middle, has completely dried up. The Jays’ starting pitching has been junk the last little while, so if there’s any lineup they should be happy to face, it’s the Mets.
