The Chicago White Sox are averaging the most runs-per-game in the American League. They’re also the league’s last undefeated team. They’ve played two games. Both of them were against the Kansas City Royals. There’s a good chance this trend won’t continue.

Jaime Garcia’s first start as a Blue Jay! He spent virtually his entire career in the National League and this will be the first time he’s ever faced the White Sox. Only one player on the Sox, Welington Castillo, has ever faced Garcia. Going for Chicago will be 24-year-old righty Reynaldo Lopez, who probably has the best arm in the White Sox rotation. He was ranked the No. 37 prospect prior to the 2017 season by Baseball America and made eight starts with the big league club last year, posting a 4.72 ERA. You might remember Lopez’s name as one of the three arms that came back from Washington when the White Sox sent outfielder Adam Eaton to the Nationals. You also might not because it’s the White Sox.

Miguel Gonzalez is back with the White Sox for a second go-around. He pitched there in 2016 and 2017 but was dealt to the Texas Rangers mid-way through last season. We’re pretty familiar with Gonzalez, a soft-tossing, pitch-to-contact style arm, from his days in Baltimore, but he hasn’t faced the Jays since the 2016 season. Last year, he posted a 4.62 ERA with Texas and Chicago over 27 starts and had a pretty ugly 1.82 strikeout to walk rate. J.A. Happ will make his second outing of the season on Tuesday. He had a pretty tough grind through the Yankees’ lineup on Opening Day, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over four-and-two-thirds innings.

Carson Fulmer was the eighth overall pick by the White Sox back in the 2015 draft and is an important piece of the team’s future. He had a strong showing last year after being recalled in September, posting a 1.56 ERA over four starts. The one issue for Fulmer during that stretch, though, was the eight walks in 17 1/3 innings. Walks have been an issue for Fulmer throughout his professional career. He walked 4.6 batters per nine in Triple-A in 2017 and 4.9 per nine in 2016 in Double- and Triple-A. He’ll go against Aaron Sanchez who was a lot better in his first start than the numbers indicate. Sanchez was throwing hard with wicked movement and solid command, but the wheels fell off as he ran out of gas. That’s completely reasonable to expect for somebody making their first actual Major League start since last July.

Thoughts…

After a solid showing against the Yankees that earned them an Opening Weekend split, the Jays have a great opportunity here to get off to a nice start to the season. They have Chicago, a team they badly need to beat up on, rolling in right now, then they’ll go to Texas for three on the weekend. The White Sox have a lineup with some young, upside bats, but the pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired. When you’re going to be facing New York and Boston as much as the Jays do, you really need to be beat up on teams like the White Sox when you have the chance.
