The Blue Jays are calling up Spencer Horwitz (among other moves)
According to the Blue Jays Twitter account, the Blue Jays have called up Spencer Horwitz, while Adam Cimber has returned from the Daddy List. To make room on the 26-man roster, Thomas Hatch and Nathan Lukes have been optioned.
Let’s look at what Horwitz has done to deserve a promotion.
Spencer Horwitz has earned this promotion:
Horwitz ranked as Blue Jays Nation’s sixth best prospect heading into the 2023 season, and he has not disappointed in Buffalo.
This season, he’s slashing .300/.421/.405 with two homers in 259 plate appearances. While that’s not the type of production from the prototypical first baseman, he has shown pop in the past as he had 12 homers in each of the last two seasons.
His lack of over-the-fence power appears to come more from his approach. For his career, he’s slashing .291/.395/.445, so while he doesn’t hit a ton of homers, you can always count on Horwitz to get on base. In fact, he has a 16.2 BB% this season, compared to a 17.8 K%.
On top of playing first base, the 25-year-old has played 108.2 innings in left field this season. This will allow the Jays to get him in the lineup in different ways, as well as off the bench as a left-handed pinch hitter.
Brandon Belt can return off the 10-day injured list on June 20th, so Horwitz’s stay may not be permanent… for now. With that being said, he has a chance to impress with the at bats he gets, even if his time in the big leagues is limited for now.
