As we all know at this point, the 2019 season isn’t about being, well, good. It’s all going to about the Large Adult Sons. We’re going to see an influx of talent make its way up to the Major Leagues this year from the Blue Jays’ loaded farm system.
The team might not be very good, but do you know what is good? That aforementioned farm system? How good?! Well, according to Baseball America, the Jays own the third best system in baseball, behind only the Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres.
Here’s what Baseball America had to say about Toronto’s system…
7 Top 100 prospects: 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1), SS Bo Bichette (8), C Danny Jansen (42), RHP Nate Pearson (70), RHP Eric Pardinho (84), 3B Jordan Groshans (89), SS Kevin Smith (91)
Notes: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. alone carries enormous value, but the Blue Jays have serious talent at all levels of the system. Several players took significant steps forward last season, which, along with the 2017 and 2018 amateur additions of players like Eric Pardinho, Nate Pearson and Jordan Groshans, adds both high-end upside and depth.
One criticism I’ve seen about Toronto’s Large Adult Sons is the lack of high-quality depth behind Vlad Jr. Keith Law who certainly isn’t a bitter ex by any stretch of the imagination, for example, is adamant that the Jays system is entirely propped up by Vlad and, to a lesser extent, Bo Bichette. But BA praises the Jays for having talent all over the system.
New additions to the top levels of Toronto’s system are Eric Pardinho, who had an impressive season in rookie ball as a teenager, Jordan Groshans, who was Toronto’s first-round pick in last summer’s draft, and Kevin Smith, a 2017 draft pick who enjoyed a breakout season between Lansing and Dunedin last summer. There’s no doubt that Vlad is the crown jewel here, but the Jays have a wealth of prospects in the system worth getting excited about.
