The Gascan is getting some love.
The MLB named Jays starter Kevin Gausman the AL Player of the Week — his first ever award in his career.
Gausman made two appearances in the last week. One against the Tampa Bay Rays where he pitched eight scoreless innings allowing just one hit and issuing one walk while fanning 10 batters.
He also got the nod Sunday against the Twins pitching six more scoreless innings fanning five batters while allowing six hits. The two performances dropped his ERA to 2.91 on the year with his FIP dropping to a career-low 1.98.
He’s been a steady presence on the mound for the Jays all year long as he’s continued to have one of his best seasons in the bigs. Across 117.2 IP this season, he’s allowed 9.6 H/9, 0.5 HR/9, 1.5 BB/9 and 10.5 K/9.
This past offseason, he inked a mammoth five-year, $110-million deal and so far, it’s paying off for the Jays. Gausman may not be in the AL Cy Young talks, but there’s no denying how much of a help he’s been to the top of the Jays’ rotation. He’s formed a great 1-2 punch with the Big Man, Alek Manoah, and should continue to be a great contributor through the length of his deal.
