Yankees 4, Blue Jays 2: Some hits would be good

The Jays managed to completely shut down Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on Friday night, but it wasn’t good enough. The team could only muster two runs on five hits and they allowed the random scraps of the Yankee lineup to pile on four runs.
  • Aaron Sanchez was good today, though his stat line won’t really reflect that. Sanchez was excellent through his first five innings, reaching the high 90s with his fastball, hitting the corners, and mixing speeds effectively, but then the wheels kind of came off in the sixth. He clearly ran out of gas and lost the strike zone but John Gibbons gave him a chance to work out of it. With the bases loaded and No. 9 hitter Tyler Wade up to the plate, Sanchez was allowed to stay in the game, but he served up a single that blew the game open. All in all, Sanchez went five-and-two-thirds allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. Remember: This was Sanchez’s first extended Major League start since last July, so there’s bound to be some rust and fatigue.
  • The positive of the game really was keeping Judge and Stanton at bay. It’s incredibly frustrating that despite those two doing nothing, New York was still able to push across four runs with dirty laundry. That said, the offence needs to be good enough that keeping the Yankees to four runs is enough for a win.
  • The bullpen was effective in relief of Sanchez. Daddy Barnes came in and got the last guy out in the sixth, though he really should have come in one batter earlier, then Ryan Tepera, Tyler Clippard, and Roberto Osuna were perfect the rest of the way.
  • The offence, yet again, was non-existent. Randal Grichuk hit his first bomb as a Blue Jay but that was the only offence the team got until Steve Pearce and Yangervis Solarte hit back-to-back doubles off of Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning. The Jays only have seven hits through two games, which is their worst result through the first two games of a season in franchise history.
  • We’ll be back tomorrow afternoon for one of those 4:00 pm games we’ll see a lot of this season. It’ll be Marco Estrada and CC Sabathia. Again, some runs would be great.
