John Gibbons will officially continue coaching in 2026.
The former Toronto Blue Jays skipper has reportedly agreed to join the Los Angeles Angels as their bench coach next season, Jeff Fletcher of The OC Register first reported Tuesday. He also added that former major league outfielder Adam Eaton has been hired to serve as their first-base coach.
Both will operate under first-year manager Kurt Suzuki, who’s the latest former major leaguer to make the jump into coaching during his post-playing career. He logged 16 big-league seasons from 2007-22, spending his final two with the Angels organization.
Gibbons worked as the New York Mets’ bench coach over the last two seasons before announcing his resignation in October, amidst the club’s wholesale personnel changes. Despite parting ways, the 63-year-old said he wasn’t looking to retire just yet and was open to returning to the dugout, and he’ll now have that opportunity in Anaheim.
Prior to landing with the Angels, many speculated that Gibbons could be a fit for the Atlanta Braves’ managerial opening, reuniting him with his former boss in Toronto, general manager Alex Anthopoulos. But that didn’t come to pass, as the organization ultimately promoted Walt Weiss — the team’s bench coach since 2018 — to succeed longtime skipper Brian Snitker.
Heading into next season, Gibbons will attempt to help bring relevance back to the Angels organization, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2014 and has finished fourth or worse in the AL West in seven of the past eight seasons.
For those curious, Gibbons and the Angels will visit Rogers Centre for a three-game series from May 8-10 during the ’26 campaign.
