The Toronto Blue Jays farm system is due for a breakout.
On Friday evening, MLB Pipeline released their top 100 preseason list, featuring two Blue Jay prospects ranked back-to-back. Their 2023 first-round pick Arjun Nimmala ranks 87th overall while their 2024 first-round pick Trey Yesavage ranks 88th overall.
Nimmala, a shortstop, had a good season in Single-A Dunedin and the Florida Complex League, as he slashed .232/.325/.482. The 19-year-old had a rough start to his season, but from Jun. 3 onward (when he was sent to the FCL), he slashed .263/.346/.565 with 14 home runs in 266 plate appearances for a 149 wRC+, with a noticeably high 28.9 K%.
According to his scouting report, Nimmala has a ton of strength and still has projection remaining. The hit tool lags behind his power tool while his approach leads to some swing and miss. Nimmala also has a strong arm and may be able to stick at shortstop.
Yesavage, a right-handed pitcher, was also selected 20th overall by the Blue Jays. The 21-year-old has yet to make his professional debut but had a 2.03 ERA in 15 collegiate starts in 2024 with East Carolina University. Moreover, he had a 40.4 K% and an 8.9 BB% in 93.1 innings pitched.
His MLB Pipeline profile notes that his fastball sits 93-95 mph with carry, while also featuring a plus slider and splitter. Yesavage also features an average curveball and average command with a menacing 6’4”, 225 lbs frame.
There are a handful of other prospects who could be deserving of Top 100 consideration. Ricky Tiedemann underwent Tommy John surgery last summer but features a high-90s fastball and two nasty secondaries from the left side. Moreover, Orelvis Martínez missed 80 games last season due to PED use, which knocked him off this list. Other players worth mentioning are Alan Roden, Jake Bloss, and Josh Kasevich.
It’s worth noting that Baseball America’s Geoff Pontes is a little bit higher on the Jays’ farm system than most, ranking five prospects in his Top 100.
Tiedemann - 49 Yesavage - 72 Nimmala - 76 Orelvis - 91 Kasevich - 94
Add in the fact that the Blue Jays have the eighth overall pick in the 2025 draft, and the farm system is on the up and up. All it needs is a little bit of development, and it’ll be in great shape.
