The 2024 season was the worst year for Kevin Gausman as a Toronto Blue Jay.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual 40-man Roster Review, where we look at the players on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster. We’ll look at how the player performed in 2024, his season projections for the 2025 season, and any storylines heading into this coming season. In this article, we’ll look at Kevin Gausman.
Gausman signed with the Jays in free agency back in late 2021. His debut season with the team was in 2022, with a 3.35 ERA and a 2.38 FIP in 174.2 innings pitched. The following season, Gausman finished with a 3.16 ERA and a 2.97 FIP in 185 innings pitched with a 31.1 K% and a 7.2 BB%, finishing third in American League Cy Young voting.
Unfortunately, the 2024 season was a drop-off for Gausman. The 34-year-old right-handed pitcher finished with a 3.83 ERA and a 3.77 FIP in 181 innings pitched. Moreover, his 21.4 K% wasn’t just the lowest of his Blue Jays tenure, but the lowest since his 2018 season.
Fangraphs’ Steamer projections believe his 2025 season won’t be much better, as it has him posting a 3.88 ERA and a 3.78 FIP in 193 innings pitched, with a 23.8 K% and a 6.7 BB%. That would be problematic, as Gausman is the team’s ace.
One of many issues for the Blue Jays next season is starting pitching. Gausman’s projected numbers aren’t great, but for any starter on their 40-man roster, he’d have the best ERA and FIP. Veering away from Gausman for a second, it could be beneficial for the Blue Jays to add another starter, whether it be the best remaining starter like Jack Flaherty or a back-end rotation starter like José Quintana.
Either way, if the Blue Jays have any aspirations of making the postseason, much less contending, Gausman will have to pitch as he did in his first two seasons with the Blue Jays.
