Two players are set to join the active roster of the Toronto Blue Jays when rosters expand on September 1st.
The team has already used more than 50 players this season, and the reinforcements will be helpful to a battle-tested squad in the final month. The rules dictate that each club must activate one pitcher and one position player as part of the roster expansion. Here’s who could be getting that call.
Joey Loperfido, OF
Perhaps the most deserving of a promotion, Loperfido exceeded expectations during his time with the Jays from early July to mid-August.
Over 30 games, the 26-year-old hit .358 (29-81) with three doubles, three homers, 10 RBI, and a .915 OPS. It’s a far cry from the struggling player that was acquired from the Houston Astros at last year’s trade deadline. He was in the mix for a roster spot in spring training, but lost out to the likes of Myles Straw, Nathan Lukes, and Davis Schneider. Loperfido worked on his game in Triple-A and hit the ground running when he got his opportunity.
Dillon Tate, RP
The Jays claimed Tate off waivers around this time last year and made four appearances for the club last September.
He was also activated this April and got into five more games, with the previous three being scoreless appearances. Combined, Tate has pitched 8.2 innings for the Blue Jays, allowed five earned runs (5.19 ERA), and has struck out 11 batters. The 31-year-old is trying to get his career back on track after being a high-leverage reliever for the Baltimore Orioles in 2021 and ‘22. His best season was 2022, when he pitched to a 3.05 ERA over 73.2 innings, with five saves.
Riley Tirotta, 1B/3B
Drafted by the Jays in the 12th round in 2021, Tirotta has steadily worked his way up to the highest level of the minor leagues this year and is in reasonable consideration to be a September call-up.
After moving through three levels of the minors last year, the 27-year-old has spent the entirety of the 2025 campaign in Buffalo, where he’s hit .285, with 12 home runs, 19 doubles, 53 RBI, and an .827 OPS. He’s a right-handed hitter who has spent most of his time as a corner infielder, but has also logged 60 games in the outfield and 10 at second base to increase his value.
Ryan Borucki, RP
The Blue Jays signed an old fan favourite this week, and there’s a decent chance he has an impact for his new team down the stretch. The lefty was part of the Jays organization from 2018-2022, appearing in 75 games and compiling a record of 8-9, with a 4.47 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 123 strikeouts over 151 innings of work. His best season was his first, when Borucki was used as a starter and went 4-6 with a 3.87 ERA over 17 starts.
He was traded to the Seattle Mariners partway through the 2022 season and enjoyed a fine 2023 season (2.45 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, 1.4 bWAR in 40.1 innings) with the Pittsburgh Pirates before stumbling over the past two years.
Trey Yesavage
Yesavage is the wildcard here. He’s represented the best of a Blue Jays farm system that has experienced a real turnaround in 2025. The development of pitchers like Johnny King, Gage Stanifer, and Yesavage has been a refreshing storyline for a minor league pipeline that was struggling in recent years. Yesavage’s season can already be considered a success; he’s closing in on the number of innings he pitched last season at East Carolina while moving through four levels of the minors and displaying occasional dominance and totaling 150 strikeouts in just 91.2 innings. Now, the Jays must decide if last year’s first-round pick is ready for the show.
This list includes players who could be called up to the majors on September 1. It doesn’t include Braydon Fisher, who was sent to Triple-A on August 21. He’s likely to be activated when he’s eligible on September 6. The same restrictions apply to Mason Fluharty, who could be reactivated as soon as September 9.
