The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move ahead of <a href="https://publish.bluejaysnation.com/2024/05/28/gdb-54-0-kevin-gausman-takes-the-mound-against-the-white-sox/">Tuesday&#8217;s game against the Chicago White Sox</a>. 

On Tuesday evening, it was announced by the team that Chad Green has been reinstated from the Injured List, with the team sending down Erik Swanson to make room.

Yes, that Erik Swanson who was the team’s set-up man during the 2023 season, who they moved fan favourite Teoscar Hernández for. It’s been a rough season for Swanson, as he has a 9.22 ERA and a 7.30 FIP in 13.2 innings pitched, along with a career-worst 15.2 K% and a 6.1 BB%. The 30-year-old also has a 3.29 HR/9, mainly because he misses his spot with his splitters.
However, given the context, it’s totally understandable. His young child was hit by a car during Spring Training, and thankfully, Toby is recovering. On top of that, while attempting to return to pitching form, Swanson picked up an injury. So while it’s not great that he’s regressed, it’s totally understandable, and hopefully, it’s just a blip in what will be a good Blue Jays career.
Green has been the total opposite for the Jays this season. In 7.2 innings pitched, he has a 2.35 ERA and a 5.48 FIP, along with a 25 K% and a 7.1 BB%. Sadly, Green hasn’t pitched for the Jays since April 15 due to a shoulder injury.
He isn’t the only Blue Jays’ pitcher who has missed time with injuries. Bowden Francis is still out with an injury and has pitched in three rehab assignments, with his latest being on Wednesday last week. It seems like it’ll only be a matter of time before he returns though, as that Wednesday outing was supposedly his last.
Another pitcher on the Injured List is Yariel Rodríguez, who made just four starts in the big leagues before a back injury landed him on the 15-day Injured List. Like Francis, he is currently rehabbing with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, although it may take a little bit of time before he returns to the active roster.
The Blue Jays have one of the worst bullpens in the league, but they’ve also had quite a few injuries to key players, including Jordan Romano who missed the first part of the season alongside Erik Swanson.
Hopefully, there will be no more injuries in the foreseeable future. If the Jays wish to contend for a playoff spot, they’ll need the bullpen to pitch like it did in 2023.
