The Toronto Blue Jays have filtered through quite a few players with injuries piling up in 2026. While this has hit the Jays’ pitching staff more than the roster players, the organization has cycled through a few different players in the minor leagues to get through some hurdles.
One of those players was Charles McAdoo, whom the Jays acquired two summers ago from the Pittsburgh Pirates. When Lenyn Sosa landed on the IL back on May 28th, the Jays turned to McAdoo to fill the void on the big league roster.
McAdoo spent just under a month on the active roster, suiting up in eight games and seeing 25 at-bats. The right-handed bat struggled to the tune of four hits (.160 average) and a .440 OPS through the small sample size, but he did notch his first big league home run, and did so during his debut game against the Baltimore Orioles. On the diamond, McAdoo split his time between first base and second base, backfilling for Clement when he was needed elsewhere on the diamond and for Guerrero Jr. when he needed a day off.
On June 20th, the Jays sent McAdoo back to Triple-A with the club needing a roster spot for Daulton Varsho, who was returning from the IL. Even without Varsho returning, the writing was likely on the wall for McAdoo to be heading back to Buffalo with the Jays trading for Luis Urias and with some other names like Sosa and Addison Barger progressing in their rehab stints. The move also gives McAdoo a chance to get at-bats every day in Buffalo versus the sporadic playing time he received at the big league level.
Since heading back to the minor leagues, McAdoo has found his swing again.
The 24-year-old has suited up in four games for the Bisons since being optioned, and the right-handed bat is riding a four-game hit streak, which includes a multi-hit game yesterday against Iowa. McAdoo is 5 for 13 (.385) with one home run and four RBIs since the return, and has also walked seven times compared to three strikeouts. Of the four games, McAdoo has walked at least twice in three of them, and is grinding out at-bats amongst his fellow Bisons lineup mates.
Against the Iowa Cubs yesterday, the Bisons put up 15 runs, and McAdoo notched his ninth minor league home run by sending a Tyler Beede cutter over the left-centre field wall 391 feet, leaving the bat at 106.6 MPH.
Back in Buffalo, McAdoo has been splitting time between third and first base while slotting in the cleanup spot of the lineup. It will be interesting to see if the Jays choose to give McAdoo some reps at second base down in the farm system, considering he took a few reps on the right side of the infield at the big league level. The Jays have begun to experiment with Sean Keys at first base, and he’s one of the hottest hitting prospects in the minor leagues, not just in the Jays system.
With McAdoo now on the 40-man roster, he’s in a better spot than some of his teammates to earn another call-up without any roster juggling required. He’s also putting himself in a good spot with his contact and ability to get on base with the walks, so he’s not hanging his head down in Triple-A and is instead getting right back to what made him a callup candidate in the first place.
