The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move earlier today, with the club announcing that they acquired left-hander Easton Lucas off the waiver wire from the Detroit Tigers organization and subsequently optioned him to triple-A Buffalo. With a full 40-man roster, the Jays moved Alek Manoah to the 60-day IL to clear space for Lucas.
Drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 14th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, Lucas gives the Jays another arm down in the minor leagues to call upon should the need arise. Working out of the bullpen, the California product has 12 big league appearances under his belt dating to last season with the Oakland Athletics.
Between 2023 and 2024 (with the Tigers), the southpaw has authored a 9.22 EAR through 13 2/3 innings with 14 earned runs allowed off 21 hits. He has amassed a 5.93 BB/9 in the Majors and struck out opponents at a 9.88 K/9 clip while working with a four-seam fastball, cutter, and slider as his main offerings.

Lucas started the year in Oakland riding the options bus before being designated for assignment in mid-May, with the Tigers picking him up. The same situation occurred in the AL Central, with the 27-year-old making short stint appearances at the big league level before being optioned back down shortly after.
In triple-A, Lucas is putting up much better results this season, authoring a 3.31 ERA through 32 appearances with 52 strikeouts compared to 23 walks. The reliever still has three minor league options at his disposal as well.
In a corresponding move, the Jays transferred right-hander Alek Manoah from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL to clear up a spot on the roster for Lucas. The former Cy Young finalist will be on the shelf for the rest of the season and a good portion of next year after undergoing Tommy John surgery earlier this season.
