The Toronto Blue Jays continue to play small ball to win baseball games, collecting 13 hits in last night’s win over the Boston Red Sox, with 12 of those knocks being singles. Four Jays had multi-hit games, including George Springer, who went 4 for 4 in the batters box and drove in three of the six runs on the night. Bo Bichette was the only one to put an extra-base hit on the board, a double to the centre field wall. He almost had two on the night, but Red Sox centre fielder Ceddanne Rafaela made a diving grab at the wall to secure the out.
It was a tough Monday evening, with winds howling and a mist/rain covering the crowd and the players for most of the game. The weather is supposed to be similar in temperature, hovering around the 1-degree-Celsius mark, and while the rain might be gone by the time the game starts, it has been steadily raining all day, and the field conditions might be very damp for the outfield. There are also going to be some high winds, so the ball might be travelling tonight if the bats can get the ball into the air.
On the mound, the Blue Jays will be sending Easton Lucas. The left-hander secured Max Scherzer’s spot in the rotation after the veteran went to the IL with a thumb injury. Lucas was stellar last week for the Jays when the Washington Nationals were in town, and the 28-year-old is looking to repeat his performance here on the road against a stronger Red Sox squad.
For Boston, ace left-hander Garrett Crochet will be taking the mound. With a contract extension of his own in tow, Crochet has been thriving out of the gate, authoring a 1.38 ERA with just two earned runs allowed off of nine hits and three walks against the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.
His last start against the O’s saw him go eight strong while limiting the damage to four hits and one walk with zero runs scored compared to eight strikeouts. That’s an impressive feat, and even more impressive considering it was against a scrappy Baltimore squad. History-wise, Crochet has faced the Jays three times (one start) and has owned them so far, allowing just two hits and zero earned runs through eight innings while striking out seven.
