The Toronto Blue Jays return to Rogers Centre for the first time since April 2.
Since the second series of the season, the Jays have spent 11 days on the road, taking on the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles. Overall, they finished with a 4-5 record, with three of those losses coming at the hands of the Mets. Since the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extension was reported, the Jays are 4-2.
Simply put, the lineup on Monday’s game is a bit light. George Springer was hit in the wrist on Sunday and was removed from the game. He’ll be out of the lineup with wrist inflmmation and is considered day-to-day, albeit the injury had the best-case scenario.
Their 1-4 is who you’d imagine: Bo Bichette leads off, Guerrero Jr. hits second, Anthony Santander hits third, and Andrés Giménez is in the cleanup spot. After that, though, the lineup is a bit weak, as Ernie Clement bats fifth, Alan Roden sixth, Myles Straw seventh, Nathan Lukes eighth, and Tyler Heineman ninth.
In fairness, Heineman and Straw have proven they deserve to be in the lineup until they cool off. Straw is slashing .375/.400/.458 in 26 plate appearances for a 153 wRC+ and a 0.3 fWAR. Even with Alejandro Kirk’s home run on Sunday, Heineman has been the better of the two catchers as he’s slashing .474/.500/.684 with a home run in 20 plate appearances.
Easton Lucas makes his third start of the season. Through two starts, he’s given up just four hits and no earned runs in 10.1 innings pitched, with 11 strikeouts for a 28.9 K%. Time will tell if he can keep this up, but it’s the early-season feel-good story.
Let’s set up Monday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, who are a surprising 4-11 to start the season.
