The Toronto Blue Jays continue to find ways to win this week, with the club locking down their fourth victory in their past five games. The results and end games have been varied – singles to multi-home run performances with mixed pitching results thrown in – but the club has found ways to top some really talented arms this week: Spencer Schwellenbach, Spencer Strider, and Bryan Woo. All of them could not figure out the Jays’ bats and ended up with the loss.
The task doesn’t get any easier for Toronto today, who will be facing the top Mariners arm in Logan Gilbert.
Seattle’s fireball-throwing right-hander has allowed just six runs and 11 hits through 22 2/3 innings of work, enough for a tidy 2.38 ERA and a 0.66 WHIP. Opponents have authored a .138 average and a .178 BABIP so far against the Mariners hurler, who boasts a stellar 12.7 K/9 along with a minuscule 1.6 BB/9 out of the gate.
His Baseball Savant page is full of red, ranking in the 98th percentile in pitching run value, while his high-90s MPH fastball sits in the 95th percentile as well. Gilbert also boasts a strong split-finger, which has produced a +3 run value while holding opponents to a .038 batting average while producing a 52.7% whiff rate.
Opposite Gilbert will be veteran José Berríos, who has had his fair share of ebbs and flows to start the year. The Blue Jays starter got off to a rough start on Opening Day and struggled in his last start against Baltimore again, allowing four earned runs through five innings.
He produced two solid appearences between the two Baltimore outings, allowing just three earned through 12 2/3 innings, but there has not been a lot of consistency out of the gate.
The Jays will have Anthony Santander in right field today while George Springer lands in the DH spot.
