After a disappointing loss on Friday night, the Toronto Blue Jays bounced back and flipped the script on the Chicago White Sox yesterday afternoon, putting up an identical 7-1 victory that had home runs come from Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Right-hander Jose Berrios also went 7 2/3 innings, helping out a depleted bullpen, and the Jays are now 41-35 on the season.
They go for the series win today, which would be their sixth of the month if successful (including the A’s series). For this game, the Jays will be sending veteran right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound.
Bassitt is making his 16th start of the season and owns an impressive 3.75 ERA and a 3.55 FIP through 86 1/3 innings. He’s commanded his pitches well to the tune of a 2.1 BB/9 and owns an 8.7 K/9 this season. Opponents have been getting hits off the right-hander this season, evidenced by his 1.297 WHIP and 9.6 H/9, but he has been able to limit the damage to just 36 earned runs against.
Toronto has won the last four games that Bassitt has started, and he’s gone at least six innings in his last three turns in the rotation, allowing four or fewer runs per outing. This will be his tenth start against the White Sox for his career, and he owns a 2.94 ERA with just 16 runs allowed through 49 innings.
Toeing the rubber for the White Sox is Adrian Houser, who is making his sixth start of the season. He is returning from the paternity list.
Houser started the year in the Rangers’ farm system on a MiLB deal before being released in mid-May and signing with Chicago. Since joining the White Sox, the right-hander has been practically unstoppable, allowing just seven earned runs across 29 1/3 innings of work. He owns a 3.47 FIP through the limited sample size and has allowed just two home runs this year.
The right-hander has done a good job at holding righty bats in check, authoring a .176/.208/.196 slash line and a .404 OPS against 51 RHBs. Opposite-handed bats have given him more trouble, with the OPS spiking to .894.
