Down goes another one.

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost another young arm to a season-ending injury as right-hander Jake Bloss is set to undergo UCL surgery on his right arm, the club announced Tuesday. It will officially mark a disappointing end to his 2025 campaign, putting him on the shelf until likely midway through ’26.

While Bloss has thrown his final pitch of the ’25 season, the team has yet to determine which type of procedure he’ll have, whether it’ll end up being full Tommy John surgery or require a brace to be inserted, or a hybrid of the two. The team also hasn’t revealed the timing of when he’ll go under the knife.

It’s a devastating blow for Bloss, who departed his sixth start with triple-A Buffalo due to injury on May 3, completing just 3.1 innings. He finishes with a 6.46 ERA and 4.74 FIP over those six outings, issuing 24 strikeouts and 13 walks in 23.2 innings.

The 23-year-old starter — acquired by Toronto as part of the package from Houston in last year’s Yusei Kikuchi trade — endured a rough start to his season with the Bisons, pitching to an inflated 10.32 ERA and 8.06 FIP over his first three starts. But he had rattled off two consecutive bounce-back performances entering what would be his final start of ’25, punching out 12 across nine innings of two-run ball — with both runs unearned.

Bloss, a third-round selection in 2023, made eight starts with the Bisons after arriving via trade. He climbed four different levels last season, including the major leagues, where he made a trio of starts for the Astros amidst the team’s rash of starting pitching injuries.

That’s something the Blue Jays organization can relate to, at least on the minor-league front, after several prospects underwent major surgeries a season ago, including Ricky Tiedemann, Chad Dallas, Brandon Barriera, Landen Maroudis, Nolan Perry, T.J. Brock and Connor Cooke. Alek Manoah also missed most of the ’24 season due to UCL surgery that inserted a brace in his right arm.

Bloss now becomes the latest name to join that list, eliminating him as a potential option to pitch for the Blue Jays this season amidst continued uncertainty involving their fifth starter’s spot.
