The Toronto Blue Jays walked away with a few more players this afternoon.
The annual Rule 5 Draft took place on Wednesday afternoon, including the Major League and Minor League phases. The Jays added three players, highlighted by right-hander Spencer Miles from the Giants organization, who was the Jays’ lone Major League Rule 5 Draft pick.
Before the draft, the organization decided to just protect southpaw Ricky Tiedemann and following today’s results, the Jays didn’t lose any players, keeping the farm system intact.
There was some concern that the Jays might see Yohendrick Pinango get selected, a left-hitting outfielder whom the Jays acquired at the 2024 trade deadline as part of the Nate Pearson deal with the Chicago Cubs. Splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A last season, Pinango collected 29 doubles and 15 home runs with 70 RBIs, finishing the campaign with a .258/.361/.430 slash line with a .790 OPS.
Other players that were potential picks for rival organizations include INF Josh Kasevich, INF Victor Arias, RHP Ryan Jennings, RHP Dahian Santos, RHP T.J. Brock, and RHP Connor Cooke.
Former Jays are finding new homes.
RHP Sam Ryan, who was released by the Jays in early 2024 and spent last year with the Los Angeles Angels organization, was picked up by the Minnesota Twins in the Minor League portion. Across 44 outings last season, he authored a 4.20 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP across 70 2/3 innings.
As well, former Jays outfielder Garrett Spain was also selected by the Twins. Spain, who was picked up by the Brewers in the Minor League Rule 5 Draft last winter from the Jays, posted a .203/.280/.364 slash line across 131 games in Milwaukee’s farm system.
