Never let your opponent know your next move.
The annual Rule 5 draft was on Wednesday. Coming into it, there was concern that the Toronto Blue Jays would lose Yohendrick Piñango. Not only did that not happen, but the Blue Jays actually picked a player, selecting Spencer Miles from the San Francisco Giants.
Miles was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 draft by the Giants, but has had an injured-filled career. In 2022 after the draft, the 6’3” right-handed pitcher threw seven and one-third innings. Missing the entirety of the 2023 season, Miles returned for the 2024 season, pitching another 7.1 innings before requiring Tommy John surgery.
The 25-year-old missed all of the 2025 season as well, but returned to play in the Arizona Fall League. With the Scottsdale Scorpions, Miles posted a 4.15 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched, with a 32.4 K% and 2.7 BB%.
Shortly after the draft, MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson reported that Blue Jays assistant general manager Mike Murov said he’ll pitch as a reliever. Despite the injuries, Miles has shown solid command in 2024 and 2025, and he’s a hard-thrower. During the Arizona Fall League, his fastball sat in the mid-90s and touched upwards of 98 mph, with a good cutter and changeup.
Miles will have to remain on the Blue Jays’ 26-man roster for the entirety of the season. If they option him, he’ll be available to all the other 29 teams, and if he clears, the Giants can get him back. It’s also worth noting that the same rule applies to Angel Bastardo, the Blue Jays Rule 5 pick last year, as he didn’t pitch in 2025.
With the addition, the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster now sits at 39 players including Cody Ponce. He’ll get a chance to compete for a bullpen spot, as will Bastardo. That said, who knows what the Blue Jays’ bullpen will look like over the coming months, as they’ve been rumoured to be looking for an upgrade.
