Things worth mentioning…

• Jose Berríos took the mound for the Blue Jays and came one out shy of recording a quality start. He tossed five-and-two-thirds shutout innings and allowed one hit and four walks while striking out eight batters. The right-hander now has a 3.39 ERA for the season.
• With two on and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Genesis Cabrera took over for Berríos and got Joey Votto to ground out to end the threat. Yimi Garcia came into the game and tossed a scoreless seventh inning with some help from a heads-up play from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and then Erik Swanson worked around a hit and a walk to get through the eighth.

• After the Reds got the Blue Jays to go three up, three down without much of a challenge in the top of the ninth inning, rookie Christian Encarnacion-Strand smashed a solo home run off of Jordan Hicks to give the Reds a walk-off victory.
• The story of this game was Toronto’s pathetic offence. The Reds started some scrub with a 6.42 ERA over eight appearances in his big-league career and he shut the Blue Jays out over five innings of work. After that, Cincinnati’s bullpen surrendered just one walk over the course of four innings as the Blue Jays were shut out again.
• Adding to the frustration of yet another limp-dick performance from the Blue Jays at the plate was the fact that Dave Hudgens, their “hitting strategist” who helped the Houston Astros cheat their way to a World Series in 2017, was sitting on his phone getting worked up about politics four minutes before the start of the game. You can save America after the game, Dave.
