While much has gone wrong this season for the Toronto Blue Jays, one offseason addition has provided more than anyone could have dreamed of.
Spencer Miles, whom the Blue Jays selected in the Rule 5 draft from the San Francisco Giants, has been nothing short of incredible. The 25-year-old was originally taken by the Giants in the fourth-round and dealt with his fair share of injuries, resulting in only 14.2 career innings at the minor-league level before joining the Blue Jays organization.
A quiet addition at the time, Miles has blown away anyone’s expectations, having appeared in 45 games (six starts) and posting a 6-2 record, a 2.77 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. The right-hander has struck out 81 batters across his 87.2 innings pitched and held opponents to a .218 average while also recording two saves.
On Wednesday, Miles joined the 6ix Inning Stretch Podcast with Lindsay Dunn and Whit Merrifield to discuss his professional baseball journey that has led him to this point, what it’s like working as an opener, and the current vibe around the Blue Jays’ clubhouse as they try to push for a postseason berth.
“When I’m in the moment, I don’t really think about it. The journey has been crazy since being drafted in 2022 and having three seasons of rehab with the Giants. I had a back surgery, then Tommy John, which will pretty much take you out for two years if it happens in the middle,” Miles said. “That took place in July of 2024 and that put me out for the rest of ‘24 and 2025. It was a 14-month recovery, so that took me to the end of 2025 and I was available to the Arizona Fall League.”
“The Giants sent me there and I did pretty well. I just showcased my ability to get back to what I could do physically. I was throwing upper 90s with strikes with multiple different pitches. Then the Blue Jays picked me and here we are just taking it one day and one pitch at a time.”
Of Miles’ six starts this season, three have come working as a true opener. In those three outings, Miles has thrown six shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out three.
“Opening is fun. I mean, it’s kind of like a close in a sense where you’re going out there and airing it out for three to six batters,” Miles said. “You might go two innings, so you are just airing it out and then you get the next seven to eight innings to go to the clubhouse, get treatment, armcare, and watch the ballgame.”
Currently, the Blue Jays sit at 73-74 through 147 games and remain 1.0 game back of the Cleveland Guardians from the American League’s final Wild Card spot. In early August, as the Blue Jays sold off players at the trade deadline, the playoffs felt like a distant dream, but with 15 games to go, the Blue Jays can sense their strong second half has given them a chance for meaningful baseball in October.
“It’s a bunch of fun. Obviously, this is my first year and my first real playoff push,” Miles said. “So, there’s some buzz around the team and it’s a lot more fun when you are winning a bunch of games. So, the past couple months have been a dream come true.”
