Blue Jays Minor League Musings: Aldo Gaxiola remains hot, Carter Cunningham power Fisher Cats to win

Aldo Gaxiola is quickly becoming an interesting prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization.
The corner infielder entered Wednesday’s Dunedin Blue Jays game having hit a home run in three consecutive games. To the shock of no one, he did it again, clobbering a ball to centre field. It came off the bat at 107.4 mph and was his 16th home run of the season.
With the home run, Gaxiola sits tied for the fourth-most in the organization, behind Sean Keys (27), Dub Gleed (18), and Carter Cunningham (17). Also sitting on 16 home runs are Charles McAdoo and Aaron Parker. Additionally, he’s hit the fifth-most home runs in the Florida State League
Gaxiola’s breakout is a surprising one that goes under the radar. Coming into the 2026 season, he hit just seven home runs over 432 plate appearances, including just four in 225 plate appearances with the Florida Complex League. Gaxiola’s 16 home runs have come in 338 plate appearances this season.
There’s still work to be done, as Gaxiola is slashing just .261/.325/.480 with 27.8 K%, well up from his 17.8 K% in 2025. Moreover, he’s drawn just 19 walks this season with his 5.6 BB% being by far the worst in his career. But his exit velocity data, courtesy of Prospect Savant, is encouraging, even if it does come with some whiffs.
The Dunedin Blue Jays ultimately lost that game to the Palm Beach Cardinals by a score of 5-3, but there were some other good performances. Dean West, a 2026 draftee, reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Catcher Giaconino Lasaracina also hit his eighth home run at the level, and his 14th overall.
Sann Omosako made his FSL debut, striking out seven over four innings of one-hit ball. The lone run he gave up was unearned. The Brazilian’s fastball averaged 90.5 mph and hit 92 mph. He generated 11 whiffs on 29 total swings, with his changeup generating six on nine total swings. Isaac Williams, a non-draft free agent, struck out four in his two clean innings.
Gaxiola’s home run total would’ve been tied with Cunningham, but the outfielder went deep for his 17th of the season and his seventh with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Cunningham was also one of four players who hit a double, joined by Gleed, Eric Snow, and Mathieu Vallee.
The Fisher Cats were the lone Blue Jays’ affiliate to win on Wednesday. Getting the win was Gage Stanifer, who struck out four and walked one over two scoreless innings. Yondrei Rojas pitched a clean inning with a strikeout for his fourth save of the season.
Unfortunately, both the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons and High-A Vancouver Canadians lost, bad news for their playoff race. Josh Stephan allowed five earned runs and was tagged for the loss in the Bisons’ game, as they fell 6-3. But Ricky Tiedemann struck out two in an inning and a third, while Daniel Guerra made his Triple-A debut. Yohendrick Piñango hit the team’s lone extra-base hit, his 13th double of the season. Keys had three of the Bisons’ seven hits, all singles.
The C’s fell 5-3 to Spokane, with Dameury Pena and Austin Smith each hitting a double. Smith also had a multi-hit game, as did JoJo Parker, his second consecutive multi-hit game. Dax Dathe made his High-A debut where he struck out five and gave up an earned run in two innings of work.
