Blue Jays prospect Daniel Guerra strikes out one in Triple-A debut

Daniel Guerra is officially one step closer to the big leagues.
On Wednesday, the 22-year-old, whom the Toronto Blue Jays signed as an international free agent in 2022, made his Triple-A debut with the Buffalo Bisons.
Guerra entered to pitch the top of the eighth inning during the Bisons’ 6-3 loss against the Rochester Red Wings. Guerra turned in a pitching line of 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, tossing 17 pitches (eight strikes) in his first test at the minor leagues’ highest level. The right-hander touched 99.5 MPH with his fastball and displayed the velocity that has generated excitement among fans of the Blue Jays organization.
For his first test, Guerra engaged in a six-pitch battle with Trey Lipscomb before finally setting down the shortstop swinging on a 3-2, 89.4 MPH cutter.
After walking Cayden Wallace on six pitches, the Blue Jays’ No. 18-ranked prospect received some help from his catcher, C.J. Stubbs. Stubbs threw out Wallace trying to swipe second to erase the threat.
Stubbs’ throw came up big as with two outs, Leandro Pineda stepped up and drilled a 2-1 cutter from Guerra 407 feet over the right-centre fence to extend Rochester’s lead to 6-3. Guerra’s cutter, which came in at 91.8 MPH, caught too much of the plate, and Pineda made him pay with his eighth home run of the season.
For his last batter of the afternoon, Guerra retired Sam Peterson with a 98.6 MPH fastball by getting him to fly out to left fielder Davis Schneider.
This season, Guerra has followed the Trey Yesavage path from a season ago. The righty started the season in High-A Vancouver and made 14 starts, posting a 3-3 record, 3.20 ERA, and a 1.32 WHIP. Guerra struck out 78 batters across his 59 innings and held opponents to a .226 average before his promotion.
Upon joining Double-A with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Guerra was shifted to the bullpen to help fast track a potential call up to Toronto. In three outings, Guerra tossed four innings and turned in a 2.25 ERA with nine strikeouts while holding opponents to a .200 average.
With an overworked Blue Jays’ bullpen, coupled with Guerra’s electric arm, don’t be surprised if he is given a shot at some point in September as the club tries to sneak into the postseason.
