Blue Jays Minor League Musings: DSL Blue Jays Red bounced from playoffs, Dub Gleed hits 18th home run

The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking for an affiliate to win some hardware this season.

Last Tuesday, the Dominican Summer League regular season came to an end, with the Blue Jays’ DSL Blue Jays Red earning a playoff berth. They won their first two games of the round robin, defeating the DSL Tampa Bay 11-5 and DSL Cubs Blue 7-2.

Unfortunately, they lost their final game to DSL Royals Fortuna. With each team going 2-1, the Royals ultimately ended up going to the semifinals, while the DSL Blue Jays Red went home. The hardest part about it was that the Blue Jays Red were oh so close to winning.

All seven of the game’s runs came in the seventh inning or beyond, with the DSL Royals Fortuna taking a 1-0 lead in the seventh. The DSL Blue Jays Red responded in the top of the eighth, then the Royals took back the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

With their season down to three outs, Gabriel Porras hit a one-out triple, then was cashed in by Samuel Orellana to force a bottom of the ninth. With two on and two outs, Elian Reyes hit a go-ahead RBI single to give the good guys the lead. But that lead didn’t hold, as the Royals scored two to walk it off and earn a semifinals berth.

Overall, it was a great season for the DSL Blue Jays Red, as they went 34-18 in the regular season and lost on a tiebreaker. But just like the Florida Complex League Blue Jays, they were bounced without picking up any hardware.

Other notes…

There are still two more teams fighting for their respective league’s championship. The Triple-A Buffalo Bisons have a 27-23 record, sitting fourth in the International League East standings and three and a half games behind the Rochester Red Wings for first.

They won their game on Sunday, taking down the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 10-2. It was a good game for their bats, more specifically, Sean Keys, who went 4-5 with his 10th double in Triple-A. Lenyn Sosa also hit a double, while C.J. Stubbs and Rudy Martin Jr. each went deep.

CJ Van Eyk started, with Ricky Tiedemann, Chad Dallas, Javen Coleman, Brendan Cellucci, and Chase Lee all appearing in relief.

The lone Blue Jays’ affiliate currently in a playoff position are the High-A Vancouver Canadians. While they sit second in the Northwest League with a 30-24 record, the league-leading Eugene Emeralds finished with the best record in the first half. That means that if they finish first in the second half, the second-placed team will play them in the NWL Finals.

Sunday could be a preview of those finals, as the Canadians lost 6-5 to the Emeralds. After five scoreless innings, the Emeralds scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and another three in the bottom of the seventh. The C’s finally put a run on the board in the seventh, then scored another run in the eighth.

Down to their final three outs, the Canadians managed to score three runs to make it a 6-5 game, but Max Viera struck out swinging with the bases loaded to end the game. Every starter had a hit, with Gable Mitchell and David Calabrese each hitting a home run, with the former hitting his first as a professional.

Even with the loss, the C’s have a three-game lead over the third-placed team, so they have a strong chance of making the championship series. The same cannot be said about the other affiliate in action on Sunday, the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

They fell 6-3 to the Erie SeaWolves, with Dub Gleed hitting his 10th home run as a Fisher Cat and his 18th of the season. Adrian Pinto also had an extra base hit, his 12th double with the Fisher Cats. On the mound, Nolan Perry gave up three earned runs and three walks in three and two-thirds innings, taking his first Double-A loss.
