Don’t look now, but the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons are on a roll.
This is the April 22-24 edition of the Minor League Report, where we look at the past three games for each of the Toronto Blue Jays’ affiliates. This week will focus on the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, High-A Vancouver Canadians, and Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays.
Let’s dig in!

Bisons win three of four

The Buffalo Bisons didn’t have a great game on Tuesday, falling 8-4 in extra innings. Joey Loperfido hit his second home run of the season in this one, while Orelvis Martínez hit a double and Riley Tirotta a triple. Michael Stefanic had a three-hit game while Loperfido had two hits. Andrew Bash pitched two innings with two strikeouts, while Bobby Milacki pitched four scoreless innings. Unfortunately, Justin Bruihl was tagged with six runs, four earned, and the loss. Outfielder Will Robertson had to retire the final out for him.
Things changed for the Bisons as they swept the doubleheader on Wednesday. First up was a 6-3 victory. Although they didn’t hit a home run in this one, Damiano Palmegiani, Davis Schneider, and Loperfido hit doubles, while Jonatan Clase had a two-single performance. Lazaro Estrada started the game, pitching four innings with three earned runs, but Jimmy Burnette and Kevin Gowdy pitched three scoreless innings.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Bisons win 3-2, with Clase and Rainer Nuñez each hitting a double. That was just two of four hits in the game as the Bisons were carried by strong pitching and clutch hitting. Anders Tolhurst gave up two runs (one earned) in four and two-thirds innings of work. Eric Pardinho pitched another scoreless inning and one-third while Hayden Juenger picked up the save.
On Thursday, the Bisons extended their winning streak to three games as they defeated the Rochester Red Wings 8-1. Martínez hit his second home run of the season, while Robertson and Berroa each hit a double. Berroa, Ali Sánchez, Robertson, and Stefanic each had two or more hits in this game. Eric Lauer made the start, pitching five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Connor Overton pitched for the Bisons for the first time since Aug. 2021, giving up an earned run in three innings of work.

Fisher Cats dropped all four games

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats are in tough, losing all four games they’ve played so far this week. On Tuesday, they fell 6-2 to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, but Yohendrick Piñango hit his second home run of the season while Eddinson Paulino hit a double. Michael Dominguez pitched three innings with five strikeouts. Ryan Jennings followed that up with two earned runs allowed in four innings, with Hunter Gregory striking out two in his two innings of work. Johnathan Lavallee gave up four runs in a third of an inning, but all of them were unearned.
On Wednesday, the Fisher Cats were shut out 3-0, mustering six hits in that game. Piñango and Alex De Jesus each had a double and a single, while Gabriel Martinez and Robert Brooks each had a single. Devereaux Harrison pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned), walking three and striking out five. Geison Urbaez pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, keeping his ERA at 0.
The Fisher Cats were shut out again in the first game of their Thursday doubleheader, falling 5-0. Piñango had another two-hit game, hitting a double and a single, while Charles McAdoo had the team’s other hit. CJ Van Eyk gave up five earned runs, striking out nine in five and two-thirds innings pitched, with Grayson Thurman recording the final out. You can’t win if you can’t score a run.
Lastly, the Fisher Cats fell 4-1 at home in Binghamton (due to an early rainout). Ryan McCarty hit a solo home run to get the party started, while Devonte Brown hit a double and Piñango hit a single. Those were the three hits of the game for the Fisher Cats. Alex Amalfi started, pitching two and two-thirds innings with two walks and three strikeouts of scoreless work. Conor Larkin allowed four earned runs in an inning and a third, while Ryan Boyer struck out three in three scoreless innings.

Canadians played three low-scoring games

The Vancouver Canadians have yet to get going. In their first game of the week, they fell 3-2 to the Everett AquaSox to move to 7-9. Je’Von Ward and Adrian Pinto each hit a home run, with Victor Arias hitting a triple. He and Pinto had a multi-hit game. Grant Rogers started the game, striking out six, walking four, and giving up an earned run in five innings of work. Nate Garkow struck out five, and J.J. Sanchez was tagged with the loss.
Thankfully, the Canadians were able to get back in the win column on Wednesday, defeating the AquaSox 4-2. Catcher Aaron Parker hit his second home run of the season, and Sean Keys hit his second double of the season, two of the Canadians’ four hits. Jackson Wentworth had his best professional start, going five innings with eight strikeouts and one earned run allowed. Jonathan Todd picked up the hold, giving up an earned run in two innings of work, and Bo Bonds picked up his second save of the season, striking out two in two innings of work.
Thursday saw another loss by the Canadians, as the AquaSox walked the Canadians off for a second time in the series. Jackson Hornung and Pinto each hit a home run, while Arjun Nimmala and Alex Stone had the other two hits. Starting the game for the C’s was Juaron Watts-Brown, who struck out six in four and one-third innings pitched. Pat Gallagher struck out five in 2.1 innings pitched, while Chay Yeager was tagged with the loss.

D-Jays take two of three

Lastly, we come to the Dunedin Blue Jays. On Tuesday, they defeated the Tampa Tarpons 6-3. Yeuni Munoz hit a double and had a three-hit game, while Edward Duran also hit a double. Braden Barry and Manuel Beltre each had a two-hit game. Khal Stephen had another good start, striking out five and allowing two earned runs in five innings of work. Bennett Flynn struck out three and gave up an earned run in his two innings of work. Javen Coleman picked up his first professional save.
Thanks to a big top of the eighth, the D-Jays were able to beat the Tarpons 6-5 on Wednesday. J.R. Freethy hit his second home run of his young career, while Brock Tibbitts hit his second home run of the season. Yhoangel Aponte hit a double, and Tibbitts and Munoz had two-hit days. Gilberto Batista made the start, giving up an earned run and striking out five in six innings of work. Colby Martin struck out three in an inning and one-third of work, picking up his third save of the season.
They lost their first game of the series on Thursday, falling 7-2. Freeth and Kendry Chirinos each hit a double, as Bryce Arnold and Peyton Powell each hit a single. Austin Cates made the start, giving up four earned runs in five and one-third innings. Not a great game as a whole.
