This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual pre-season list, in which I’ll take a look at the top 50 prospects in the organization. If available, we’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports.
Let’s take a look at Davis Schneider.
<h2>Getting to know Davis Schneider…</h2>
Position: Second base/Left field/Third base
Bats: Right
Born: January 26, 1999
Acquired: 28th-round, 2017 draft (Blue Jays)
2023 Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Previous Ranking: 4
Schneider’s big breakout came in the 2022 season, where he slashed .253/.366/.457 with 16 home runs between High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. It’s not that Schneider hadn’t had success in the minor leagues before, as he had a 149 wRC+ with six home runs in 150 plate appearances in 2019 with the Jays rookie advanced team. However, Schneider never had more than 216 plate appearances in a single season prior to 2022.
The 2022 season was great, but the league took notice of his tenure with the Buffalo Bisons in 2023. There, he slashed .275/.416/.553 with 21 home runs in 392 plate appearances, along with a 18.4 BB% and a 21.9 K%. In total, he had a 142 wRC+ and his 21 home runs ranked third in the organization, just behind Orelvis Martinez and Damiano Palmegiani. Which is even more impressive, considering he spent the final two months in the big leagues.
Schneider’s first month and a bit in the big leagues was absolutely insane. From August 4 to September 12, Schneider slashed .370/.500/.815 with eight homers in 102 plate appearances for an unsustainable 252 wRC+, along with an 18.6 BB% and a 28.4 K%. This included a home run in his first big league plate appearance at Fenway Park, a series where he had nine hits in 15 plate appearances, as well as two home runs.

As one would expect, Schneider cooled off to end the season, slashing .057/.154/.114 with just two hits that both came in the final game. Despite not getting hits, Schneider was still hitting the ball hard, but was just getting unlucky.

Fangraphs doesn’t rank the 25-year-old as a top Jays prospect, but <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/mlb/scott-mitchell-top-50-blue-jays-prospects-of-2024-1.2064424">TSN’s Scott Mitchell</a> and <a href="https://www.baseballamerica.com/teams/2023-toronto-blue-jays/prospects/">Baseball America</a> both have him as Toronto’s eighth-best prospect. 
Mitchell notes in his report that the strikeout rate in the big leagues (30.5 K%) is an area of concern, specifically the hole in his swing, the high fastball. Schneider has worked to improve it, but it’s still a work in progress. As for his glove, Mitchell states that some see his glove as “passable” at second base and “just fine” in left field, but his catch in Spring Training is an encouraging sign.
There’s a lot of underlying numbers that show it wasn’t just Schneider getting as hot as the sun, including the fact he’s a patient hitter and he barrels everything, but I go into great detail in his 40-man roster review article, <a href="https://bluejaysnation.com/news/blue-jays-40-man-roster-review-davis-schneiders-breakout-was-among-the-best-stories-from-the-season">which you can read here</a>.
Either way, the 2024 season will be a big season in determining whether or not Schneider ends up as an everyday second baseman or a utility player. But the power is legit and he pairs that with a good eye.
