As we inch closer to the start of the regular season, the Toronto Blue Jays have made two more roster cuts.
The team announced after Friday’s game that they’ve optioned Leo Jiménez and Joey Loperfido to Triple-A Buffalo.
At one point last season, it seemed as if Jiménez didn’t have an additional option year, meaning the Jays would’ve needed to designate him for assignment to get him to the minor leagues. However, due to an injury-filled 2021 and 2022, Jiménez was given an additional option year. It hasn’t been a great Spring Training for the 23-year-old shortstop, as he’s slashing .192/.382/.269 with two doubles in 34 plate appearances.
Loperfido was in contention for an outfield spot out of Spring Training but like Jiménez, he hasn’t had a particularly good showing. Through 33 plate appearances, Loperfido is slashing .207/.303/.414 with no home runs and four doubles, hitting his fourth on Friday afternoon.
You can expect even more roster cuts in the near future. One outfielder who hasn’t been cut despite not being on the 40-man roster is Alan Roden. He’s arguably been their best player this Spring Training and is surely on his way to making the roster, even if it means designating someone for assignment.
Another outfielder who remains on the Spring Training roster (who is also on the 40-man roster) is Steward Berroa. Seen more as a fifth outfielder, Berroa has also had a good Spring Training as he’s slashing .303/.324/.455 with a home run in 34 plate appearances.
This doesn’t even mention utility players like Davis Schneider and Addison Barger, who are both having a solid Spring Training, with Barger hitting his third home run of Spring Training on Friday. Lastly, there’s also Nathan Lukes who had a solid end to his 2024 campaign and has had a good Spring Training.
Although Jiménez and Loperfido were cut, it’s not hard to imagine a world where they impact the 2025 Blue Jays in one way or another. It’s nice to have the depth the Jays do.
