A Blue Jays prospect on the West Coast has earned some early-season hardware.
Carter Cunningham, a 10th-round draft selection in 2024, is off to a roaring start with the Vancouver Canadians and has earned Northwest League Player of the Month honours for April. He was initially named the Player of the Week to kick off the season when he smacked three home runs and ten hits through the weekly series, and now takes home the bigger honour.
Cunningham has been a power threat from the batter’s box right from the start of the season, smashing six homers through 87 at-bats and 23 games. The California product posted a .299/.431/.609 slash line with a 1.040 OPS through April, while also adding five doubles and two triples on top of the home run power. Cunningham also added 23 RBIs while scoring 20 times, and also swiped two bases in the process. He appeared in every C’s game to start the year, the only player to do so.
The left-handed bat is a versatile player, splitting time between the corner outfield spots while also spending time at first base.
Last season, Cunningham spent the entire year in Vancouver and amassed a .220/.346/.414 slash line through 102 games. He amassed 15 doubles, two triples, and 16 home runs with 59 RBIs tacked on.
If Cunningham can continue to produce at his current rate, his days at Nat Bailey Stadium are likely numbered.
