Spencer Horwitz has been mashing lately.
The No. 18 ranked prospect of the Toronto Blue Jays (according to MLB Pipeline) was named International League Player of the Week after going 15-for-28 with three home runs and 10 runs batted in across six games for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He’s the first member of the Bisons to win the award this season.
After Horwitz’s huge week, he now has a .319 batting average and an .898 OPS for the season, along with seven home runs, six stolen bases, and a 57-to-55 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Blue Jays added Horwitz to the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 Draft last winter. He got off to a strong start for the Bisons and was called up to the Blue Jays to make his big league debut in June. Over three games in the Majors, Horiwtz went 2-for-8 with two singles and two walks along with his first RBI.
A switch hitter who plays in the corner outfield positions and first base, Horwitz could figure into Toronto’s plans in the second half of the season. He boasts a 1.011 OPS as a right-handed hitter against left-handed pitchers for the Bisons this season and the Blue Jays badly need some help when it comes to hitting lefties.
