Blue Jays sign Magnolia Duo Groshans and Kloffenstein

As expected, the Blue Jays are signing their duo of top draft picks from Magnolia High School.
According to the Star-Telegram, the Jays are giving No. 88 overall pick Adam Kloffenstein to a $2.5 million signing bonus. That’s about $2 million over slot value to get the righty pitcher to forgo his commitment to TCU. It was reported soon after that No. 12 overall pick Jordan Groshans had been signed for $3.4 million. That’s a fair bit below the $4.2 million projected slot for the pick.
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise as Toronto’s draft strategy largely came down to getting these two teammates into the system together. The team had to allocate about $2 million of bonus pool money from elsewhere in the draft to get Kloffenstein signed and a fair amount of that came from Groshans signing for less than slot value.
Obviously there are still players left to sign, most notably Griffin Conine, but the Jays appear to have pulled a nice haul from this year’s draft. They’re adding two very high upside high school players to their already-deep system. Groshans is said to have some of the best power of any player in the draft while Kloffenstein is a big, projectable pitcher who can already touch the mid-90s with his fastball.
