Right-hander Brett de Geus is changing teams (again).
The 27-year-old reliever is joining his fourth organization since the start of last season after being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations, as the Toronto Blue Jays announced Wednesday afternoon. He was designated for assignment last Friday to make room on the franchise’s 40-man roster in correlation with Jeff Hoffman’s signing.
Toronto claimed de Geus off waivers in September 2024, making him one of several waiver claims in the front office’s attempt to fill a disastrous bullpen with as many warm bodies as possible. Before arriving north of the border, he had briefly spent time with the Miami Marlins, who claimed him off waivers from the Seattle Mariners last August.
His Blue Jays tenure only lasted a pair of relief outings, leading to four runs allowed (all earned) on three hits and two walks while recording one strikeout across two-and-a-third innings. He also made a trio of appearances at triple-A Buffalo, tossing three scoreless innings, only surrendering three hits and punching out three.
Between Seattle, Miami and Toronto, de Geus pitched to a 7.15 ERA and 3.78 FIP with seven strikeouts over 11.1 combined innings. At triple-A, he logged 39 innings, posting a 5.31 ERA and 4.62 FIP with 27 punchouts.
For those curious, the Blue Jays would have specified if they had received international bonus pool money from the Pirates in exchange for de Geus — which they did not.
