The Toronto Blue Jays announced a flurry of roster moves today involving two players who were designated within the past week. The Jays have traded outfielder Steward Berroa to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations, and also announced that right-hander Dillon Tate passed through waivers unclaimed and accepted his assignment to Buffalo.
Berroa was designated for assignment on May 7th when the Jays selected right-hander Braydon Fisher to the active roster. The Dominican product had a solid spring and spent some time on the active roster last year but was optioned to the minors during spring training, given the glut of outfielders vying for spots on the roster. In triple-A this year, the switch-hitter amassed a .195/.267/.234 slash line with a .501 OPS through 77 at-bats. He had fallen further down the depth charts with Joey Loperfido, Jonatan Clase, Alan Roden, and a host of others ahead of him when it comes to returning to the Blue Jays.
Last season with Toronto, Berroa posted a .189/.333/.216 slash line with one double and one RBI through 37 at-bats.
Tate was optioned to Buffalo on May 7th when the Jays needed some bullpen arms (Fisher) to help bring some life into the relief corps and was DFA’d two days later when the Jays called up Michael Stefanic from Buffalo, who needed a spot on the 40-man roster.
The right-hander signed a Major League deal in spring training and started the year in triple-A to get game-ready before getting called up alongside Paxton Schultz on April 20th. With the Jays, he posted a 5.06 ERA through 5 1/3 innings with three earned runs off of seven hits and six walks compared to seven strikeouts.
With his service time (4.144), Tate could have rejected the assignment to triple-A after passing through waivers and instead tested the free agent market. He has accepted his move to Buffalo and will remain with the organization.
