The Toronto Blue Jays’ future ace is dealing.
Selected 20th overall in the 2024 draft, Trey Yesavage has been terrific over his first few professional starts. On Friday afternoon, the 21-year-old made his fourth start of the season and was terrific, firing four and two-thirds innings with two runs allowed, one hit, two walks, and striking out 10 to bring his season ERA to 3.12.
As you can imagine, Yesavage finished with a game-high 16 swings and misses as the Dunedin Blue Jays defeated the Tampa Tarpons 4-2. Unfortunately, the game didn’t feature statcast or a broadcast, so it’s unclear to know what he averaged on his fastball.
Still, it’s been an impressive start to his career. His debut saw him fire three and two-thirds innings with no earned runs, six walks, and four strikeouts, by far his worst start. He rebounded in his next game, pitching four innings, giving up one earned run, and striking out four .
Although Yesavage allowed three runs in his third start back on April 19, he struck out a career-high 10 and avoided walking a batter for the second consecutive game, bringing us to his performance on Friday afternoon.
The question becomes, how long will Yesavage be at the lowest level of the Blue Jays “A” affiliates? It’s a pretty simple answer, not much longer. Let’s look at Ricky Tiedemann and his fantastic 2022 season as a comparable.
Tiedemann dominated Single-A, giving up two runs in his start before pitching 15 scoreless innings over his next three starts. He only made two more starts in Single-A before the Jays promoted him to High-A. After eight starts with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, Tiedemann was promoted to Double-A, where he finished his season.
The biggest difference is their age. At the time, Tiedemann was only 19 years old, making this feat all the more impressive. Yesavage is 21 and will turn 22 at the end of July and he is far more polished than Tiedemann was at the time, as he pitched three seasons in university compared to Tiedemann’s one season at junior college.
All in all, it has been a great start for Yesavage, and hopefully, he can keep it up throughout the season. Shoutout to Gage Stanifer as well, as he picked up his fourth win in his fourth start, firing four scoreless innings in a piggyback role with Yesavage.
