It looks like the Bradley Zimmer era has come to an end.

The Blue Jays announced on Monday that George Springer has been activated from the 10-day Injured List and that Bradley Zimmer has been designated for assignment.

Zimmer was acquired from Cleveland right at the start of the season in exchange for relief pitcher Anthony Castro. Zimmer had a horrendous run at the plate for the Blue Jays, slashing a .105/.209/.237 line with two home runs and three runs batted in over 87 plate appearances.

The role that Zimmer fulfilled on the team was to be a defensive replacement who could provide an excellent glove in centre field, but he became redundant when the team inked Jackie Bradley Jr. to a contract. It seemed after Bradley Jr. was brought in that Zimmer’s days on the team were numbered.

Somebody might pick Zimmer up to play the same role he did for the Blue Jays, giving a team speed and defence, but his numbers at the plate were so bad this season it wouldn’t be shocking to see him slip through.

Another thing worth noting about the Zimmer DFA is that it opens up a spot on the 40-man roster, perhaps for Julian Merryweather, who’s currently on the 60-day Injured List. Merryweather has pitched three rehab innings and the Blue Jays could use his swing-and-miss stuff in their bullpen.

Getting Springer back will be a welcomed addition for the Blue Jays as the team has gone ice cold offensively as of late. During their three-game series with Cleveland over the weekend, the Blue Jays scored just four runs.
