Just over two years ago, Mitch Bratt got the nod for Canada in their World Baseball Classic group stage matchup with the United States. At just 19 years old, Bratt would face the unenviable task of navigating through a lineup that consisted of many of baseball&#8217;s best hitters and some certain future Hall of Famers. He was only able to record one out, giving up six runs en route to a 12-1 loss.
Despite the tough outing, it appears as if the Newmarket, Ontario native has used it as fuel to develop into a better pitcher.
Bratt has appeared on the Texas Rangers&#8217; top prospect list over at <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/rangers/mitch-bratt-683352">MLB Pipeline</a> for the last couple of years, while also placing fifth on our preseason <a href="https://bluejaysnation.com/news/blue-jays-nations-top-20-canadian-baseball-prospects-for-2025-5-mitch-bratt">ranking of top Canadian prospects</a>. He isn&#8217;t relied on as the most flashy prospect, as he doesn&#8217;t necessarily wow with any one particular pitch. The left-hander&#8217;s calling card is his command and control of each of his pitches, limiting walks in the process.

Bratt was placed at Frisco to begin the 2025 season, where he&#8217;s been nothing short of spectacular. At the time of this writing, he owns a 1.94 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, a career best 11.0 K/9, and 1.3 BB/9 across eight starts. At 21 years old, he is still 3.7 years younger (on average) than his competition at the level. If his success keeps up, there&#8217;s a good chance he will get a taste of triple-A ball before the season&#8217;s over, putting him on the cusp of the big leagues.
After posting a 3.54 ERA in 16 high-A starts in 2023, Bratt returned to the level to start 2024. After posting a 3.03 ERA across 15 starts, he got the call to double-A Frisco at just 20 years old to end the year. It isn&#8217;t all that common for teams to aggressively promote their young pitching prospects, but Bratt&#8217;s command has allowed him to move quickly through the Rangers&#8217; system
The most encouraging sign for the 2021 5th rounder has been the strikeouts. He has been lauded for his control of all five of his pitches, even if none of those pitches grade out as more than an average offering. He has proven that his pitch mix can certainly play at the double-A level, generating swings and misses while dominating hitters. His name is at or near the top of most statistical categories in the Texas League, including ERA, WHIP and strikeout rate.

Canada has a chance to put forth a more competitive roster at the World Baseball Classic next March, and Bratt&#8217;s development could prove to be an important piece of the puzzle. Between him and Jonah Tong, another young pitcher who&#8217;s been dominating double-A (2.37 ERA, 15.3 K/9), the pitching staff could be much improved from the 2023 iteration.
Bratt came into the year as someone who was seen as a high-floor, low-ceiling type of guy who could become a four or five-type starter in the big leagues. However, from what he&#8217;s shown so far in 2025, it may be time to raise our expectations for the young lefty.
