As expected, it was an uneventful Rule 5 Draft for the Blue Jays, who are currently operating with a full 40-man roster.

The only thing really worth mentioning is the fact that pitcher Dany Jimenez was selected by the Oakland Athletics. Jimenez was selected last year by the San Fransisco Giants, pitched one-and-one-third innings for the team (surrendering an earned run on three walks and a hit), and got returned to the Blue Jays.

Jimenez, who’s been used almost exclusively as a reliever since he was signed by the Blue Jays back in 2015, has put together some pretty impressive numbers in the minors. In 2019, he posted a 2.59 ERA and an insane 14.2 strikeouts per nine in 45 appearances between Dunedin and New Hampshire.

Maybe he’ll stick in Oakland this time around. Who knows!

Also, in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft, the Blue Jays grabbed shortstop Sebastian Espino from the Mets, and lost pitchers Jake Fishman, Justin Dillon, and Zach Jackson and catcher Yorman Rodriguez. The only name from that list I’m familiar with is Zach Jackson but it turns out this isn’t the same Zach Jackson who the Blue Jays traded to acquire Lyle Overbay from the Brewers in 2005.

Anyway, the Rule 5 Draft has concluded and the Blue Jays didn’t lose any names of note like Logan Warmoth, Kevin Smith, or Josh Winckowski, so if you’re a fan of any of those middling prospects, today is a big win.
