On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired left-hander Eric Lauer and cash considerations from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Lauer was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on May 11 after struggling through the start of the 2026 campaign. Through eight games (six starts), the 30-year-old posted a record of 1-5, an ERA of 6.69 and a WHIP of 1.49.
After becoming a major factor during the Blue Jays’ run to the World Series last season, Lauer struggled to find that success, allowing 11 home runs across 36 1/3 innings, just four less than the 15 he allowed all of last year.
In 28 games (15 starts) last year, Lauer went 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. The left-hander jumped between the Blue Jays’ rotation and bullpen over the course of the campaign, finishing the season with 104 2/3 innings. Lauer also put together a strong postseason for the Blue Jays, making five appearances and finishing with a 3.12 ERA.
Lauer’s shining moment of 2025 came during Game 3 of the World Series. During the Blue Jays and Dodgers’ 18-inning marathon, Lauer tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings to continue to give the Blue Jays’ offence a chance to claim the win. Lauer allowed only two hits and struck out two batters during his outing.
Following an outing in Arizona on April 17, in which the Blue Jays used Braydon Fisher as an opener, Lauer spoke out about his frustrations of entering the game from the bullpen, stating, “to be real blunt, I hate it”. Blue Jays manager and Lauer had a conversation following those comments, and stated they remained on the same page, but the relationship appeared to be fractured after that night.
In Lauer’s last outing on May 10, before being DFA’d, Lauer entered in the fourth inning and was hit hard by the Los Angeles Angels. Lauer finished his afternoon with a pitching line of 5 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, allowing three home runs, and picking up the loss in the process. Right-hander Yariel Rodríguez replaced Lauer on the Blue Jays’ 26-man roster and has made two appearances for the club.
The Dodgers are currently dealing with injuries to their pitching staff, having recently placed Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Jack Dreyer on the injured list. Snell is set to undergo surgery for loose bodies in his elbow and remains without a timetable for his return. Lauer has the chance to pitch meaningful innings for a Dodgers team that sits first in the National League West with a record of 28-18.
